Hyperion Submits Application for Air Permit
December 20, 2007
ELK POINT, S.D. – The sponsor of what will be the cleanest oil refinery in the United States filed an application today for its air permit to be issued by the South Dakota Department of Environment & Natural Resources (DENR). Hyperion Resources’ application also includes a state-of-the-art power plant, which along with the refinery, constitutes the cornerstone of the Hyperion Energy Center.
“Protecting air quality is paramount, and the air permit is one of several important permits we must receive before we can begin construction on the Hyperion Energy Center,” said Project Executive Corky Frank. “This is a major milestone for this project.”
The 613-page application was submitted to DENR officials today for the Hyperion Energy Center, proposed to be located near Elk Point in Union County, South Dakota. The Union County location is one of the sites in the Midwest still under consideration for the energy center.
Hyperion immediately posted the application on its website (http://www.hyperionec.com). “We think it’s important that the public be able to review our application.” Frank said. He also noted the application will be thoroughly examined by the experts at DENR, and that in South Dakota the application will undergo a public hearing and public comment period.
“We look forward to that scrutiny, Frank said. “It will ensure the public interest in air quality is truly protected and respected.”
The Hyperion Energy Center enjoys broad support in Union County and the region, and several local jurisdictions and organizations have already endorsed the project. “We are encouraged by the strong, positive community response we have received,” Frank said. “People in the area are eager for a project that brings jobs with family friendly wages, stabilizes and increases the tax base, and does so in an environmentally sound manner.”
Hyperion is currently in the site-selection phase to determine the best location for Hyperion Energy Center. The center will include a 400,000 barrels-per-day refinery producing ultra-low sulfur gasoline and diesel, as well as an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant. All facilities associated with the Hyperion Energy Center will incorporate the most advanced commercially feasible emission control technologies and adhere to green principles, as spelled out in the company’s Green Charter, Frank added.
Frank underscored that Hyperion is dedicated to ensuring that America has adequate energy supplies and that this energy is produced in an environmentally responsible manner. Hyperion is devoted to raising the standards by which the entire energy industry is judged.
Construction of the energy center will employ an average of 4,500 workers over a four-year period, and will provide approximately 1,800 full-time, good-paying jobs when operational. Construction will begin after all the appropriate zoning changes have been approved and necessary permits have been obtained.
