Hyperion Gains Local Support KMEG 14 As people listen to Hyperion's experts pitch their design at the second information forum Tuesday night, some wander to a table in the back where J.B. Mercer greets them. With some quick conversation, some sign up to join 'Citizens For Hyperion'. "I think a refinery like this is going to built," said Mercer, Chairman of Citizens For Hyperion. "And I think why not here?" Mercer said more and more are supporting Hyperion Resources' plans to build an oil refinery and energy center in Union County. "It's just the fact that the people that are against it yell louder," said Tom Stevens, a North Sioux City, SD resident and supporter of the Hyperion project. Mercer emails updates on the project to over 150 people. Although he admits not all are necessarily supporters. But many are interested in the more than 1800 jobs it would bring to the area and the billions in revenue it could bring to the state. "Well I work at a local hotel and it's going to bring business to town and help all of the businesses around town with more people circulating," said Janet Kluber. "We'll also have grocery stores, medical clinics, better hospitals, and since we'd have a better tax base...better schools, law enforcement," said Stevens. For many in Union County, those benefits are hard to ignore. |
