Mercy Medical Center of Sioux City has endorsed the Hyperion Energy plan to build an oil refinery north of Elk Point.

The hospital issued a statement that president and CEO Paul Dougherty signed.

The statement says Mercy understands the project's economic potential. It says Texas-based Hyperion is a good corporate citizen that has promised the project will meet or exceed state and federal safety standards.

The statement recently was filed with the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Mercy is about 30 miles from the proposed refinery site.

The refinery project goes to a public vote June 3 in Union County. It then would need about two years to clear hurdles in the permitting process. Construction could begin in 2010.
